The V Family Trip to Florida - Our Holiday Heaven!

When I think of holiday heaven I automatically think of our trip to Florida. Ok, so it was all the way back in 2013 but it was the best holiday we've ever had and not only did it leave us with a lifetime of memories, it also left us with a little something else. Read on to find out what that was...

First of all I'd just like to say that hubby and I had never been to the USA before and we'd always dreamt of going so this was a really big deal for us. Now, I have a bit of an issue with flying so I knew getting there was going to be scary for me. I also had to hide the fact that I was terrified of flying from the kids because it was their very first flight and I didn't want to make them scared too. Luckily I managed to keep my cool and the kids were none the wiser, the flight was uneventful and we arrived in the insane heat of Florida ready to begin our adventure.

By the time we had picked up our hire car, stopped at a Walmart to stock up on essentials and then found our way to the villa it was night time and we were pretty exhausted so we left unpacking for the morning and went straight to bed.

Once we were all refreshed (or as refreshed as we were going to be) we had some fun in the pool and went to find the crazy golf course that the kids had spotted on the way to the villa the day before.

The pool at our villa kept the kids happy and cool when we weren't out and about. The weather was so warm that we were even able to go in it late at night using the lights at the bottom of the pool, this was a real novelty for all of us but the kids in particular enjoyed that feature!

A trip to Discovery Cove is a must for any holiday to Florida, we booked our dolphin swim before we left the UK because a friend had told us that you can't guarantee a slot once you arrive. The whole day was so special, it was just such a beautiful place. We went snorkeling around a gorgeous river and even in an area full of amazing fishes and rays. Well, I say we but I didn't actually do that part because I was too scared, hubby said it was a truly amazing experience for him though!

All food and drinks were included in the price so we weren't spending money on drinks all day (we went through so many drinks over there because it was just so hot).

The dolphin swim itself was fantastic and something I will always remember, they are beautiful creatures and so unbelievably strong! When our dolphin was pulling me along I could really feel how powerful it's muscles were.

There was also a giant aviary where birds landed on you while you fed them, T loved this but N was not so keen on trying it.

Disney World was just amazing, it was so so magical. Even the pylons were touched by the Disney magic:

We visited each of the Disney parks and to be honest it was so much to take in, I kind of wish that we hadn't bought tickets for all the theme parks because it felt like we had to squeeze everything in to the 2 weeks that we were there and that left us shattered. I guess the reason we did that though was because we didn't think we'd ever be going back so we wanted to do as much as we could. Since then, however, we have decided that we definitely want to go back so we're saving for the next trip!

Seeing the Disney castle for the first time made me feel so emotional, I've been to EuroDisney but it just didn't have the same effect on me - this one felt like the real deal.

There were shows performed in front of the castle on a regular basis and they ended each of these with huge fireworks displays which, we discovered when walking close to the castle, were full of glitter magic fairy dust! We were sparkling all day.

At Disney's Animal Kingdom we went on a safari and completely fell in love with the cute baby giraffes. The whole park had a jungley feel to it and really appealed to T and N who wanted to go back there a few times.

My favourite part of this park was the Tree of Life which I had only ever seen on TV so I couldn't wait to see it up close!

Universal Studios and the Islands of Adventure were another favourite of ours, especially as that was where we saw the Harry Potter train and bought 'real' wizard wands!

There were also lots of fun rides, we particularly enjoyed the water rides because they cooled us down in the hot weather - did I mention it was hot? It was here that N tried her very first corn dog (she didn't like it) and got her very first hair wrap (she loved it).

This was also where we saw our first parade - Spongebob Squarepants and the Minions made a lasting impression, it was all very exciting. Afterwards we walked round the corner and came face-to-face with a Transformer taking photos with people, we just couldn't resist getting involved but I must admit that the huge robot did make me a little bit nervous - it looked so big and scary in real life.

Busch Gardens took us about an hour to drive to but it was worth it because it had some great rides. They also had lots of animals, including a gorgeous tiger who was actually roaring as we walked past - I'd never heard this in person before so that was a great experience for me.

Our visit to Planet Hollywood was another memorable experience from the holiday, we've never been to the London version so it was really exciting to get the chance to go there. The food was perfect and the service was great. The kids had the most amazing, most creamy milkshakes ever and I had this very attractive blue drink which I didn't know the name of - I simply asked for the blue drink in the menu photo because I'm classy like that! It did taste yummy though so clearly I made a good choice.

We also visited Seaworld, all the other Disney Parks, lots of food places and a fab designer shopping mall where we stocked up on some bargains. It really was the trip of a lifetime.

Now you may be wondering what I was talking about when I said Florida left us with a little something else? Well it seemed that we unknowingly brought home an extra souvenir - a week after we returned home I discovered that I was pregnant!! It turns out that I fell pregnant with E right in the middle of our holiday.

So you see, Florida is always going to be a special place for us because it gave us E and completed our family. This is another reason we're so keen to go back (no, not to make more babies), so that we can take E to the place where she began - our holiday heaven!

  1. Kate, what a wonderful blog post. Feeling emotional! I remember when you were so excited about Florida so it's great to have had a 'window' into your trip.

    1. Thanks Shaz, it makes me emotional whenever I read it too! It's a post that I've wanted to do for quite a while but I didn't feel like Me, My Books and I was the right place for it.

Thank you for reading and commenting, much appreciated as always x

    2. I'm trying to make my book blog more personal so I know what you mean. Carol (DizzyC) has changed her book blog for books and crafting. Historically I've seen this with the US (blogging about more than one thing).

I'm enjoying getting to know you here :) x

    3. It's difficult to make a book blog more personal isn't it! It was a tricky decision to start a whole new blog but in the end I just couldn't bring myself to change Me, My Books and I.

It's working ok so far, I'm still reading very slowly so it's just not possible to update the book blog as often but with this blog being more personal it's easier to update on a regular basis!

  2. Lovely post Kate! We've been to Florida a few years back and loved it just as much as you did!

    1. Thanks Heidi, it seems that everyone I've spoken to who has been to Florida feels the same way! It's a lovely place to be :)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
