This was a plane that had just taken off. Inside the plane was our ten-year-old daughter. N even spent 10 minutes flying the aircraft herself!!
So how did this all come about? Basically her school runs a Flight Club for a few very lucky Year 6s. Each term any children who would like to take part apply for a place and only a handful are chosen - T applied every term but unfortunately he never got the chance.
One of the school governors is a qualified pilot and he comes into school once a week to teach the children all about flying and the technical parts of the aircraft. They get extra homework, are expected to work hard and really put the effort in, then at some point during the term they get to go to a local airfield as a group and fly a plane.
N went up with two other girls (and the pilot) and each of them flew the plane for about 10 minutes. I was a nervous wreck as I saw the plane take off and fly into the distance, I couldn't even drink a coffee which is absolutely unheard of in my world. I was so thrilled for her because she was, understandably, really excited about it but the protective side of me found it sooo difficult to accept my baby was up in the sky without me.
She came down and was absolutely buzzing, it was such a fantastic experience for her and she still sometimes turns round to me and says "I flew a plane mum"! Her school is incredibly lucky to have someone who is willing to spend his own time giving the children this kind of opportunity and we are personally very grateful that N was able to achieve something so amazing. It's certainly something she'll never forget.
Would you like to fly a plane or have you flown a plane? I'd love to hear about your experiences.
