Book Review - The Waking Land by Callie Bates

A bold and gorgeous fantasy featuring a brilliant heroine on the cusp of womanhood, The Waking Land is the first of a trilogy that will delight fans of The Red Queen, Six of Crows, and Court of Thorns and Roses.

"It's been fourteen years, since King Antoine took Elanna hostage. Fourteen years since her father's rebellion failed. Fourteen years spent being raised by the man who condemned her people to misery. A man she's come to love as a father.

Now 20, Elanna is about to be taken prisoner once again... but this time by her father's mysterious righthand man.

Her father wants to reignite his rebellion, this time using Elanna as figurehead. He will tell his followers she is the legendary Wildegarde reborn, a sorceress who could make the very earth tremble.

But what no one knows is that magic really does flow through Elanna's veins. Now she must decide which side she's on, and whether she'll use her powers for mercy... or revenge."

I was first drawn to this book by the stunning cover, then I read the description and I desperately wanted to know more.

What an adventure!

I haven't read from this genre for quite a while so I was quickly absorbed by this magical world and devouring each and every word on the pages in front of me. I was so engrossed in the storyline that I forgot to make notes as I read (something I always do when reviewing a book).

Elanna found herself in the middle of a war and with her magical abilities she was a useful asset but she wasn't entirely comfortable with the expectations placed on her shoulders. To me, she seemed like a lost soul, never quite fitting in and unable to do what she wanted to do in life. Magic was something she was holding herself back from, she liked it but it was almost as though she didn't want to like it... for now!

Jahan, Finn and Alistar were just a few of the male characters who touched Elanna's life while she was finding her way through it. I had a feeling one of them would provide her with a love interest but which one would it be? Who could she trust?

There were all sorts of twists and turns along the way and Elanna was forced to find her strength to overcome some pretty major battles. These battles were heart-poundingly exciting, I could almost smell the scent of war and hear the bullets whizzing past.

An action-packed read, The Waking Land was full of rituals, history, magic and a twinkle of romance - it ticked all the boxes for me.
